Weeks ago, my brother had informed me that he was going to be kicked out of the house on a Saturday evening, so that his wife could host a ladies night. He challenged me to plan something to do. After some research and gathering some small parameters (location, cost, etc.) from my brother, I had narrowed our choices to a few events. However, with time dwindling before our Saturday Guy’s Night, I still had yet to confirm my possible plans and in some cases, they had become too expensive to execute. Enter Matt Nathanson; signer, songwriter, part-time stand-up comedian. The night before my brother’s and mine “date”, I had the pleasure of taking in Mr. Nathanson’s show in Minneapolis. After the show, Matt spent quite a bit of time to meet and take photos with several of his fans, myself included. It was at this moment, that a light bulb went off. I had always kept Matt’s Saturday night show in Iowa in the back of my mind, but it was sold out, and with tickets going for 3x the face value on the secondary markets, it was well out of the budget my brother and I had set up.
But what if I could get the two of us into the show? And who better to ask than the artist himself? Without hesitation, Matt said, “For sure.” He simply had me give my information to his manager Paul and thanked me for the time and wished me good night. Success!!! Now, I am nobody important. Simply a fan who had no reservations about asking one of his favorite artists for a favor. Matt easily could have said, “Sorry, no can do,” and I would have completely understood. But he didn’t. Perhaps he saw an opportunity to help someone out. Or the chance to build up some good karma. Whatever his reason for saying yes, he made a wise choice, as I am here today, writing this post sharing my story about his good will. Anyone who’s met Matt knows that he’s a really funny and witty guy. And his current acoustic tour has allowed him to really let that part of him shine. The two shows couldn’t have been any different, with drastically different venues, setlists, and antics (one would’ve thought the Prince cover would have happened Friday night in Minneapolis and not Saturday in Iowa). I enjoyed myself both nights, having shared them with friends and family. And my brother was happy to have a night out of the ordinary “Let’s go to the bar.” The mini road trip allowed us to rock out to some great driving tunes, take a nap in the middle of the night at a truck stop and realize “Hey, this isn’t that far away, we should do it again.” Anyways, thank you Matt Nathanson (and Paul) for a great weekend. You have truly made me an advocate for you and your music (as if I wasn’t one already).

An Update, FINALLY!!!
Good Morning,
Okay, I know. I’ve been a little AWOL lately, but fortunately I have some new things to share. Not 1. Not 2. But 3 new photo galleries.
Also, the playlist page has been updated with all of my monthly #songoftheday lists. March and April found me seeing more shows, traveling to Nashville, and getting a new job.
Needless to say, I was quite busy. Enjoyed seeing the following acts: Andy Grammar, Matt Hires , Chris Hardwick, all those I took in during my week in Nashville and many more. (Special Nashville page and photo gallery coming soon!)
Looking forward to the numerous shows I have planned from now until September. As always, thanks for taking a look. have a great day. Happy Hump Day!!!
Kacey Musgraves Photo Gallery
Just added photos from this past Friday night’s show at the State Theater. Opening act John and Jacob were great and took the time to meet each and every fan after the show. Kacey brought her sass and penchant for a killer wardrobe to the stoic State Theater. I believe grown men in matching grey suits with blinking lights can put a smile on anyone’s face. Kacey’s cover of TLC’s “No Scrubs” was a definite highlight, as was her final farewell, an acapella rendition of the Roy and Dale Evans Rogers classic “Happy Trails.” Check out the gallery here.
Changes coming!
As you may have noticed, the site has laid dormant for a few weeks now. I have been in the process of thinking of some different approaches to the playlists included, reviews (to do or NOT to do), and some other items to improve the site. I was finding it difficult to cultivate a new playlist each and every week, so going forward, the playlists will be less frequent, but with many more tracks. Also, I haven’t been attending as many shows as I did during the last few months of 2014, so I don’t have any photos to share from recent shows. Fortunately, I have a few shows lined up for the next couple of months (with the possibility of a few OUT OF STATE)! Also, I have a backlog of photos from shows and events from the past 7+ years. So I am hoping to sprinkle some of those in from time to time. Thanks for the support and get excited for some fun changes to MUSICNUTMATT!
A Day Late and a Bonus – Happy New Year!
Whoops. Sorry. My Bad. Had a busy Monday and was unable to get around to this. So here is this week’s Fab 5 as well as a new photo gallery from the last show I attended before the new year (Winston Drei Tod at the Acadia on Sat December 20). The boys of WDT had a lot of fun with the small show as they started their set out with a crowd sing-along to “Silent Night”. They sprinkled one more holiday tune into their set, as they did a great cover of The Beach Boys’ “Little St. Nick” Find the gallery here.
Only one change to the list this week as Gabrielle Aplin makes her debut with “Home” a beautiful track from her 2014 EP English Rain. She knocks a giant off the list, as the boys from 1D once again fall off the list. Their song “18” did, however, last three weeks, and thus has secured a place in the Hall of Fame. James Bay hangs on for a record fifth week with “Hold Back The River.” Celebrating week number three on the list are Bea Miller (“Young Blood”) and Andy Grammar (“Honey, I’m Good.”). Hozier sticks around for a second week with “Someone New.” Check out the new Fab 5 now!
